Stepping out along the Rhine together
Stepping out along the Rhine together! Everyone is welcome! Let's start the last week of May...
moreRoute and destination
From Basel we walk along the valley of the High Rhine, which keeps changing from broad and placid to wild and precipitous and back again. Passing through Rheinfelden and Zurzach, we come to places that are perhaps less well-known, but no less beautiful and appealing: Eglisau, Kaiserstuhl, Klingnau – the site of the majestic Benedictine abbey of St Blasien. Just a few more loops of the river bring us to the mighty, thundering Rhine falls, Europe's biggest waterfall in terms of volume. We pass through Schaffhausen, Switzerland's most northerly city, to Stein am Rhein, then along the lower lake to Kreuzlingen, where Lake Constance opens up before us in its full majesty. The final few kilometres take us along lovely lakeside paths to the 2,000-year-old town of Bregenz. The Romans settled here, where the four countries of Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein now meet. With its special geographical and scenic features, the town is still as memorable today as it has always been.
The Bregenz Festival, an arts festival taking place on Lake Constance on the world's largest floating stage, is famous far beyond Austria's borders. Its oversized sets and unique acoustics are enormously impressive. Take part in the "Step by step" project, and with a little bit of luck you could win tickets to enjoy the festival in person in our prize draw.
